International Applicants for Graduate Study

There may be additional documentation that needs to be submitted along with your application. Please use the guides below for a successful application process. 

English Proficiency

English proficiency scores (TOEFL, IELTS, Pearson) are required for all applicants who have not obtained a degree in the United States, Canada (excluding province of Quebec), United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and the Commonwealth Caribbean (Antigua, Barbuda, Belize, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago) .

Minimum scores required for each exam:

  • TOEFL: 88 points, minimum of 20 points in each section
  • IELTS: 6.5 total band score
  • Pearson: minimum score of 59

*Applications without English proficiency scores will not be reviewed.

Transcript Evaluations

A transcript evaluation is also required for all international transcripts. Evaluations must be completed by an accredited agency approved by NACES, or you may submit your documents for an evaluation by George Mason’s International Credential Evaluation office. If you choose to use Mason’s service, please expect 6 weeks for processing, with additional time built in for peak processing periods.

You will submit the following documents in your application portal as part of your I-20 application:

  • Certificate of Financial Responsibility
  • A current bank statement verifying the funds indicated on your certificate
  • A copy of your passport ID photo.

If you already hold an F-1 or J-1 visa, please provide a copy of your I-20 form and your passport ID photo as part of your application.
