S-CAR Activity Recap - October 2017

Summary 

Two book chapters were published during the month of October, one by Karina Korostelina, and six journal articles, including from new S-CAR Professors Daniel Agbiboa, and Pamina Firchow.  MS alumnus, Habtamu Dugo, just informed us of his new book, published in September. Alumni of the field, Charles Martin Sheilds and Mohammed Cherkoui each published reports. Eleven media articles by or about our community members, eight television interviews and one radio interview were broadcasted. Our faculty, including Daniel Rothbart, Patricia Maulden, Arthur Romano, Karina Korostelina and Alan Gropman were engaged in multiple local and international presentations. Hilmi Ulas, who had to change his dissertation defense date due to Hurrican Irma, defended at the end of the month.

Books

Habtamu Dugo, MS '15, published a new book entitled “United States Interventions and Conflict in Multiethnic Ethiopia” on September 15th, 2017 by Lambert Academic Publishing.

Book Chapters

Karina Korostelina published a book chapter entitled “Reconciliation in Ukraine: within and across the boundary” in the Societies" in Transition: The Former Soviet Union and East Central Europe Between Conflict and Resolution published by Verlagsgruppe Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, October 2017.  

Cindy Mazur, PhD ’11, published a book chapter entitled, “Ministry, Mayhem, and Magic: Called to Conflict Resolution and Conciliation, in the book Faith of Our Mothers, Living Still, by Presbyterian Church, October 2, 2017.

Journal Articles 

Daniel E. Agbiboa authored an article entitled “Borders that continue to bother us: the politics of cross-border security cooperation in Africa’s Lake Chad Basin” in Commonwealth and Comparative Politics, October 17, 2017.

Nimet Beriker, PhD '93, worte an article entitled "Mediation as Politics: How Nations Leverage Peace Engagements?" published in International Negotiation, October 2017.

Sarah Federman, PhD '15, wrote about "Genocide Studies and Corporate Social Responsibility: The Contemporary Case of the French National Railways (SNCF)" in Genocide Studies and Prevention, October, 2017. 

Pamina Firchow and Roger MacGinty wrote an article entitled "Including Hard-to-Access Populations Using Mobile Phone Surveys and Participatory Indicators" in Sociological Methods & Research, October 3, 2017. This article provides the methodological background of the EPI project pilots. 

Karina Korostelina published an article with Lynette Camilleri entitled “Contact, perceptions of threat, and assessment of migration policies in Malta”, in The Journal of Identity and Migration Studies, 11 (2), (2017). 

John deRosa published an article  “Mapping Russian Nuclear Narratives” in The Journal of Slavic Military Studies, Volume 30 (4) on October 31, 2017.

Michael Loadenthal, PhD '15 wrote an article entitled " Othering Terrorism: A rhetorical strategy of strategic labeling for Genocide Studies and Prevention, November 1, 2017.

Daniel Agbiboa was interviewed on AlHurra TV on the question of "Can Former Boko Haram Terrorists Be Rehabilitated?" on October 5, 2017

Mohammed Cherkaoui, appeared on a couple of a television programs. The first was under the theme "New Talks on the Western Sahara in Morocco" on DWTV, October 17, 2017 and the second was "العربي اليوم" on alraby.tv, October 23, 2017.

Yerevan Saeed had multiple interviews on the current crisis in the Kurdish region of Iraq including interviews with Voice of America Kurdish Edition, Al Jazeera on October 17 and on the 23rd, and finally on BBC

S-CAR Events, Presentations and Public Lectures

Sandra Cheldelin, Professor Emeritus, and Molly Tepper, a PhD Candidate and staff member, provided a facilitation training workshop on October 29th, for the Fairfax County and Fairfax Interfaith Communities in Dialogue, in preparation for their upcoming public interfaith dialogue in November. 

Rob Ericson, PhD '07, and adjunct professor, conducted an academic workshop, "Creativity in seventeen syllables - Haiku for learning" at the 9th Annual Innovations in Teaching and Learning Conference at Mason on September 22, 2017.  The session emphasized that haiku can be used in any discipline, including the social and physical sciences to help students step back from a linear daily world and into a more creative learning environment.  Participants crafted and shared haiku demonstrating a wide variety of learning and teaching applications.

Adina Friedman, and S-CAR alumna Mary Hope Schwoebel were "roundtable presenters" at the Seventh Annual Graduate Education Symposium, hosted this year by S-CAR alumna Pushpa Iyer at the Monterey Institute for International Studies, in Washington D.C on October 10th 2017.    

Alan Gropman organized and provided a presentation in Mandarin via a translator for the Dean of The Schar School for Policy and Government, on the topic of think tanks on October 25th.   He also presented at the West Point, on the topic of General Benjamin Earl Davis Jr.  A West Point Association of Graduates then published an article this month from his August speech. 

Karina Korostelina, presented “Teaching history in the framework of peace education: Identity-based training for history teachers,” at the UNISEF and Georg Arnhold Symposium, “Preparing Educators for Peacebuilding in Violent Conflicts”, Florence, Italy, October 16-18, 2017.

Patricia Maulden, organized a Dialogue and Difference Series entitled "Fear: Immigration". October 17, 2017 which was hosted on the Fairfax campus.

Arthur Romano, presented "Civility and Difference: Sustaining Conversations that Matter on Campus" at Washington State University campus on October 9, 2-17. 

Daniel Rothbart facilitated the symposium “Turkey at the Crossroads: Peace and Security in the Middle East” at S-CAR.  He also gave a presentation entitled “Darfur: Symbolic violence and Genocide” at the conference Women and Genocide in the 21st Century:  the Case of Darfur, October 28, 2017, Washington, D.C.

Carlos E. Sluzki held plenary presentation Regression, rituals and power in therapy, Colloquium: The creation of the therapeutic environment in Cerfasy, Neuchatêl, Switzerland, October 20-21, 2017. He also presented Master class, Centro Milanese di Terapia Familiare in Milan, Italy, October 23, 2017.

Dissertation

Hilmi Ulas, PhD candidate, defended his dissertation entitled "The Democratization of Unrecognized States: A Comparative Study" on October 31, 2017. 

Events

S-CAR Undergraduate Events, Fairfax Campus

 The S-CAR Undergraduate Progam hosted a Fall 2017 Academic Planning Workshop on October 9th, 2017.  

The Undergraduate Peacebuilding Fellows Program hosted its’ orientation session on October 27th, 2017.   

Patricia Maulden, organized the “Dialogue and Difference Series” with a continuing theme on the topic of “Fear: Immigration”, October 17, 2017. 

S-CAR Graduate Events, Arlington Campus

On October 3rd Alexander Cromwell, Ph.D. Candidate, participated in a panel discussion on the “Role of Peace Education in Conflict Zones” facilitated by the S-CAR Alumna Hodei Sultan who currently works for USIP.  

On October 4, 2017, S-CAR, in cooperation with the organization World Peace and Reconciliation (WP&R), organized a discussion “Engaging Sudanese Diaspora in Conflict Mitigation” facilitated by Ph.D. Candidate Adeeb Yousif.  

The S-CAR Student Association hosted a Resume Writing Workshop on October 4th for graduate students, in preparation for the S-CAR Internship and Career Fair later in the month.  

On October 18 in cooperation with ArtWorks for Freedom and the University Libraries, S-CAR organized a Film Festival on the issue of Human Trafficking. Documentaries including “The True Cost”, “Not My Life” and “Trafficking Beyond Borders” were followed by brown-bag discussions.  

On October 20, Maryam Abdallah, S-CAR Career Services Advisor and Lisa Shaw, Director of Student Services, hosted an Internship and Career Showcase featured leading organizations in the field for S-CAR students seeking future employment and professional development opportunities.  

On October 23rd, S-CAR faculty, Julie Shedd and S-CAR PhD candidate Samantha Borders-Shoemaker, lead a public workshop on Media Literacy and Dialogue Skills in their recurring “Hot Topic: News Blues and How to Defuse” series at the Reston Regional Library.  

The S-CAR Graduate Student Association hosted “Landmines and Peacebuilding: 20 years after the Mine Ban Treaty” presentation with the Executive director of HALO Trust (USA) Mr. Adam Jasinski. The discussion was facilitated by Emeritus faculty Dr. Sandra Cheldelin.   

S-CAR Events at Point of View International Peace and Research Center, Lorton Va

As part of Mason’s Annual Alumni Weekend, S-CAR’s Director of Development Marie Seniw hosted our alumni at Point of View for a Painting Party on Saturday, October 14, 2017.   

An annual S-CAR Daffodil Planting party was coordinated by Emeritus Professor Christopher Mitchell and Professor Mara Schoeny on October 28th, 2017. 
 
Professor and S-CAR PhD alumni Johannes ‘Jannie’ Botes was remembered with an official tree planting ceremony with family and friends on October 29th, 2017.
