The Sandole family and the School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution are establishing a scholarship endowment to honor Dennis Sandole’s memory and carry forward his legacy in this community. The award will recognize students who continue his academic scholarship, international students, and those who have served in the armed services.

When Dennis was hired in 1981 as the first dedicated faculty member for the new Center for Conflict Resolution (CCR) at George Mason University, he had already contributed more than a decade of scholarship and teaching to the field in both the United Kingdom and Germany.
A former U.S. Marine, Dennis earned his doctorate in 1979 from Strathclyde University in Glasgow, Scotland, after which he taught at University College London—where he was a member of John Burton’s Centre for the Analysis of Conflict—and in two Europe-based master’s programs in international relations facilitated by the University of Southern California for members of the U.S. military.

Dennis’s contributions at CCR as both a scholar and a founding faculty member undergirded the Center’s growth into an Institute and eventually a School, propelling the S-CAR community to the fore of the field of conflict analysis and resolution. His persistence in the face of challenges made him a top-notch scholar, and his dedication to furthering scholarship in the field of conflict analysis and resolution was matched by a dedication to enabling the next generation of scholars and practitioners to make their own contributions to the field.
