S-CAR Diversity Committee seeks nominations and announces election

The S-CAR Diversity Committee, which was formed in January 2017 by Dean Kevin Avruch, has formalized its structure and is seeking nominations for students and alumni to serve as voting members for the 2018-19 academic year. The committee will include five elected members who are students and alumni.

If you would like to nominate yourself or someone else for a student or alumni position, please send an email with the name and affiliation (student or alumni) of the nominee to Gina Cerasani at gcerasa1@gmu.edu by November 7. The election will take place online November 9-13. Elected individuals will be contacted November 14.

All interested S-CAR community members are invited to join the Diversity Committee’s meeting on November 14, 2:00-4:00 pm in Arlington. Please contact Gina Cerasani for the agenda and room location if you plan to participate.

Diversity Committee Mandate

Recognizing the diversity across the S-CAR community and the value diversity brings, and acknowledging challenges in building an inclusive and equitable community, the S-CAR Diversity Committee is charged with:

  • Fostering and supporting a community that promotes the equitable representation and treatment of all members of the S-CAR community;
  • Encouraging efforts and accountability in increasing diversity and equity within the S-CAR community;
  • Providing and promoting opportunities for the S-CAR community to develop deeper awareness of and skills to address issues and challenges negatively affecting individual community members and the community as a whole, such as historical and ongoing injustices, structural violence, power imbalances, and cultures of intolerance; and
  • Serving as a resource for the S-CAR community to engage with issues of diversity, inclusivity, and equity by hosting events, gathering resources for use in classrooms and other spaces, and offering suggestions for finding relevant information.

The Diversity Committee understands its responsibility to examine S-CAR’s practices with regard to diversity and equity, to raise issues for consideration by the S-CAR community, and to provide reflective spaces for community engagement.
