International Applicants for Graduate Study

English Proficiency

George Mason University requires all applicants to provide proof of English proficiency through a standardized test. It is required of all applicants unless they have earned a bachelors, masters, or doctoral degree from a regionally accredited university in the United States, Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Canada (excluding Quebec), Cayman Islands, Dominica, Fiji, The Gambia, Ghana, Gibraltar, Grenada, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Malta, Namibia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Seychelles, South Africa, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, United Kingdom, Zambia, Zimbabwe. If you have earned your degree from outside of this list of countries, you will be required to submit scores from an English proficiency test. This requirement is a George Mason University-wide policy, and we are not able to waive it. Minimum scores required for each exam:
•    TOEFL: 88 points, minimum of 20 points in each section
•    IELTS: 6.5 total band score
•    Pearson: minimum score of 59
•    Duolingo: 120 minimum score
*Applications without English proficiency scores will not be reviewed.

Transcript Evaluations

A transcript evaluation is also required for all international transcripts. Evaluations must be completed by an accredited agency approved by NACES, or you may submit your documents for an evaluation by George Mason’s International Credential Evaluation office. If you choose to use Mason’s service, please expect 6 weeks for processing, with additional time built in for peak processing periods.

Visas

You will submit the following documents in your application portal as part of your I-20 application:

  • Certificate of Financial Responsibility
  • A current bank statement verifying the funds indicated on your certificate
  • A copy of your passport ID photo.

If you already hold an F-1 or J-1 visa, please provide a copy of your I-20 form and your passport ID photo as part of your application.
