September Summary
September ushered in the start of the Fall 2018 semester here at S-CAR, and with it came dozens of publications, presentations, and awards among the S-CAR community. S-CAR faculty and students received six grants and awards focused on international and local peacebuilding. Two books exploring peace and violent extremism (respectively) were published, including one from Pamina Firchow. Several alumni of S-CAR wrote chapters in Lisa Schirch’s book on violent extremism, and six journal articles were published, including ones from Arthur Romano and Richard Rubenstein. Throughout September, S-CAR students, faculty, and alumni explored a variety of topics, including U.S. politics and developmets in the Middle East, in nine newspaper articles and four TV/video presentations. S-CAR faculty provided five public lectures and presentations during September, and the S-CAR community came together in Arlington on September 26 for the 29th Annual Lynch Lecture, this year delivered by Georgetown Law Professor Paul Butler.

Robin Ericson, Adjunct Faculty, PhD ’07, conducted a workshop on “Adapting Active Learning Techniques for Traditional Classroom Settings” at the George Mason 10th Annual Innovations in Teaching & Learning Conference on September 14, 2018.
Patricia Maulden was a panelist for three public lectures. The first, “9/11 Evening of Reflection: Remember, Reflect, Restore,” was for the 6th Annual Mason Nation 9/11 Day of Service. She also presented a paper on “Causes v Symptoms of Intolerance: How to Grow Peace” for the Global Youth Peace Dialogue held at George Washington University. Finally, for George Mason University’s Pizza & Perspectives session on “The United States of America: A Polarized (Privatized?) Nation,” she presented a paper on “Public/Private Funding Nexus in Higher Education: Policy, Markets, & Their Effects.”
Daniel Rothbart presented a paper on “Compassion, Practice and Peacebuilding” at the Peace and Justice Studies Association Meeting in Philadelphia on September 28, 2018.
Professor Paul Butler, from Georgetown University, presented his new book, Chokehold: Policing Black Men, at the 29th Annual Lynch Lecture on September 26, 2018. Susan Hirsch moderated the discussion, which focused on race and social justice within the United States. Dean Kevin Avruch introduced the event.
